FLAG FLUTTER INSTABILITY
What are the forces that a flag produces on its flagpole?
The periodic oscillations of a flag can be used to harvest wind energy.

SHELL BUCKLING INSTABILITY
What is the minimal force to crush an empty coke can? Can we guarantee that a space rocket shell will never collapse?
Surprisingly, there is no universal answer to these seemingly basic questions about buckling of imperfection-sensitive thin shells.

CHEWING FOOD
Why do we eat the way we do ?

The chewing frequencies of terrestrial mammals are bounded by simple physical laws, imposed by jaw muscle actuation and by saliva flow rate. Data can be directly analyzed from modern video-sharing websites.

PUMPING BLOOD and SniFFING AIR
In multicellular organisms such as humans, active devices are necessary to guarantee uniform access to oxygen for cells, and efficient elimination of wastes. Soft pumps such as the heart or the respiratory system are evolutionary innovations that solve this problem.

Trees in STORMS
Trees of different ages and species break at approximately the same wind speeds.
We address this curious observation with a minimal set of ingredients : tree allometry, linear elasticity, brittle fracture
and air drag.
